With their marvellous carvings, saviour symbolism of the Holy Cross, and holy power, Khachkars were beloved by pilgrims from the very beginning of the tradition to craft them. Thus, for a pilgrim coming to Armenia, Khachkar is a really unique opportunity of communion with holiness.
Khachkars were placed with special ceremony, during which they were blessed and anointed, after which they performed their holy function.
Some Khachkars have the inscription "Lord Jesus on this" on them. Usually Khachkars were named after saints like Holy Mother of God, St. Sargis (Sergius), Gevorg (George), Poghos (Paul), Petros (Peter), Stepanos (Stephan), Hovhannes (John), Grigor (Gregory). Sometimes the image of the saint was depicted on the Khachkar and believers expected the intercession of both the Holy Cross and the saint while praying in front of them. According to the tradition, Khachkars named after Holy Mother of God grant happiness to families and mothers, St. Gevorg (George) Khachkars grant strength and courage to soldiers, All-Saviour (Amenaprkich) Khachkars heal various sicknesses. Some Khachkars, like the All-Saviour Khachkar in Haghpat, are particularly famous for their healing power.
The usually open-air placement of Khachkars and its invitation to worship through the Cross on it makes it open to any believer. The cross on the Khachkar is a custodian of remembrance to God, leading and showing the way toward the Second Advent. Thus, it serves as mediator between people and God. Psalm Tours pays specific attention to Khachkars during the pilgrimages. A pilgrim full of belief in the power of God through the symbolism of Khachkars may really get involved in a miracle. Let with God’s help that come true.
